In the United Kingdom, for a qualification to be recognized within the national frameworks—the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF), the Credit and Qualifications Framework for Wales (CQFW), or the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) for England and Northern Ireland—it must be granted by an accredited awarding body. These bodies are either acknowledged by government-appointed regulatory agencies or, in the case of higher education qualifications on the SCQF and QCFW, possess degree-awarding powers. The regulatory bodies include Ofqual in England, the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations & Assessment (CCEA) in Northern Ireland, the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) in Scotland, and Qualifications Wales in Wales. The Quality Assurance Agency oversees all UK higher education providers and manages the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ).

The Register of Regulated Qualifications, which covers England and Northern Ireland, lists more than 200 Awarding Bodies. Some of these organizations focus on particular subject areas, while others specialize in specific types of qualifications, such as ‘A’ levels, GCSEs, and vocational competence or knowledge-based certifications.
